Each concerto is paired with a sonnet, likely written by Vivaldi himself, that outlines its scenes. The opening Allegro non molto evokes oppressive midday heat: long, sighing orchestral chords and languid violin phrases suggest drowsiness and torpor, while an agitated accompaniment hints at the nervous restlessness of people and animals under the sun. The slow middle movement, Adagio e piano / Presto e forte, is a tense, contrasting episode in which a hushed, suspended violin line conveys anxious anticipation, often interpreted as sleep or as a sudden, dangerous calm, punctuated by explosive bursts that foreshadow the storm to come. The final Presto erupts into a furious, precisely notated tempest: rapid scale figures, violent bowing, and forceful orchestral tuttis depict thunder, lightning, driving wind, and the panicked flight of peasants and animals.
