When he was just 13 years old, his family fell into deep financial hardship, forcing them to leave Paris. Massenet, desperate to continue his musical studies at the Paris Conservatoire, refused to go with them and stayed behind alone in the city with no income. To survive and pay for his classes, he spent his teenagers years working exhausting nights as a triangle player and percussionist in theater pits and performing as a street musician on the cold pavements of Paris. He would practice his piano exercises on a cardboard mockup of a keyboard when he couldn't afford a real instrument. His relentless hustle paid off when he won the Prix de Rome—the highest musical honor in France—and transformed himself from a starving street kid into one of the country's most celebrated operatic masters.
